Harmonic Tension and Musical Phrases

This is a project I did in the spring of 1998 for my physics class. We were allowed to do a project on any topic we liked. For my project I chose to examine a theory that I had been contemplating for while, namely, I believed that there was a way to quantify the notion of dissonance and consonance in music. More specifically, I sought a formula/algorithm which would return a value quantifying our notion of "harmonic tension" for a given chord. In this report I examine the results generated by my proposed algorithm. * Note: The Word and PDF versions do not have the graph embeded in them. You can view the graph here.
